PDMP Queries - NarxCare vs VA State PDMP!

PDMP Information  for prescribers.....  We have been working with NarxCare (ApprissHealth) Reports over the past several months!

Basic Comparison of NarxCare Reports and Virginia PDMP.

Turn around time: 1. Narxcare Reports = about 10 seconds; 2. Virginia PDMP = about 45 seconds.

NarxCare reports are blazing fast!.  Easy to accomplish at the point of care.   Virginia PDMP take much more time and are slower.  They are more cumbersome to use at the point of care but are certainly Do-Able. We have automated provider access to the PDMP and it is performed with the click of a button - fields are typed
automatically for provider with data from EMR.  Still SLOW but useable.

Return Report Patient Search Accuracy:

1. Narxcare Reports = 99%;

2. Virginia PDMP = 95%.

Narxcare Reports use more data points to find correct patients.  Narxcare reports use address and phone number for better accuracy and in general, return the correct reports on the correct patient mostly ALL the time.  Virginia PDMP requires only Last Name, First Name and DOB for searches.  We have found the Virginia PDMP occasionally returning INCORRECT reports with their searches.  Entering optional Patient address and phone often DOES NOT produce the correct patient report

from State PDMP.  We have had to go to PARTIAL NAME searches for some patients if correct reports are not found.  THAT IS VERY CUMBERSOME.  HINT: for your State PDMP - if you are not getting the correct report - don't get frustrated as we did!!  ( We had patients that have ongoing prescriptions for scheduled drugs and NarxCare reports were 100% correct but VA PDMP reports were bringing up the wrong patient (same name and DOB but different residence and different prescriptions!).  It took a call to VA PDMP to sort this out.   Patient had a Middle initial on the First Name line - -  without that initial - we kept getting the wrong patient - and NO choice of patients with the same name.  Answer - Partial First and Partial Last name search.  Gave us the 2 patients and we could then select the one we wanted.  Frustrating and cumbersome - but it worked!

As providers, we expect to put in the most accurate data and get the most accurate results.  We have to understand the vagaries of aggregate data and the searches.  So, when your PDMP does NOT return your expected patient - don't get flustered -  use PARTIAL NAME SEARCHES!  Partial Name searches can be the 1st 3 letters of Last name and 1st 3 letters of First name and then the DOB!!!  You might then get what you need to find!

I will give you some illustrations of Partial Name Searches in another blog!  I will also give prescribers some help with performing queries and analyzing data in upcoming blogs.  Visual Data representation of PDMP reports is much more useful to me - I will show you some of these in upcoming blogs!

PDMP query - it's the law!  Make the PDMP work for YOU!
